to be his vice presidential nominee. do you think that distance between ryan and romney, ed, is the most important thing? most important opening tonight for joe biden? >> well, in your opening you talked about how they're very much the same. washingtonites. but the way they got there is a lot different. ryan's path was one of privilege. joe biden's was one of true middle class. i think tonight's debate is as much about how liberals are going to feel when it's over with, as paralleled to how they felt last week, so let down. i was in ohio. that's all they could talk about. i was in florida. that's all they could talk about. this tonight is about a motion. if democrats want to take away from tonight's debate that they feel a lot better about their case to the american people. and that was the shortcoming of the president last week. there were lies that were flying across the table last week, across the deck that were just coming so fast and furious, i think president obama didn't know which one to go after first. joe biden's in his wheelhouse tonight. he's probably one of the most politica
where the polls have shifted, obviously some momentum now for romney, do you believe that vice-presidential debate blunted that momentum, or is it a wash? >> it's really a wash. there is not a situation where you can -- that you can point to where a vice-presidential debate has changed anything. whether you believe ryan won, which a couple of polls, c-nbc and cbs show him winning, other polls believe biden won. i believe it's a wash. if you say that biden won, my bet is that bernard believes that -- even if you believe that, you take the most emphatic democratic win in 1988 -- didn't matter. it just doesn't matter when it gets down to it. >> bernard, let's move to the movements and polls in ohio, pennsylvania, florida and virginia. real clear politics average has obama up slightly, but nevertheless, i think the bump that mitt romney received from the debate performance was a little bit bigger than most people, certainly myself, predicted. go ahead? >> i think that's true. but what the vice-president debate did is blunt that. i think we have seen the end of the momentum on mitt
? >> i think this vice presidential debate is important because mitt romney won so big last week on wednesday night. the question for paul ryan is can he protect in a way mitt romney's achievement and can he consolidate it and after the romney debate after the ryan debate in a sense can it confirm what romney did. i think it is a very important moment. vice president biden will try very hard to retrospecktively discredit mitt romney's victory. he will say maybe obama was off his game a little. he won't say that but implication. all lies, deception, flip flopping, big mirage that you saw for 90 minutes. biden is going to come incredibly hard at romney. ryan has to defend romney and in effect consolidate romney's gains. like coming in in the second leg of a relay race. your team is ahead and you got to hold the lead and got to, of course, attack the obama biden record but above all sort of consolidate what romney did in the first debate and not let biden undercut it. >> geraldo: so you think that joe biden has to do something the president did not. he has to take it to his opponent
